Alpha Electronics’ Bulk Metal® Foil Technology-based RWB series improves overall environmental performance and long-term stability

MALVERN, Penn. (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — VPG Foil Resistors, a product group of Vishay Precision Group, Inc. (NYSE:VPG) and a manufacturer of the industry’s most precise and stable precision resistors, today announced that Analog Devices has approved Alpha Electronics RWB100R0AL and RWB2K000AL Bulk Metal® Foil technology resistors for use with their new AD74413R integrated circuit solution.

The AD74413R is a quad-channel software configurable input/output solution for building and process control applications. Analog Devices noted that the outstanding stability and precision of the RWB100R0AL and RWB2K000AL resistors complement the performance and the AD74413R in real world applications.

Specifically, the AD74413R datasheet calls for an external 100 Ω ‘RSENSE’ resistor used to measure current output, current input, and RTD values. Analog Devices noted that the accuracy and stability of this resistor directly affect the performance of the circuit. The Alpha Electronics RWB100R0AL resistor was approved by Analog Devices for ‘RSENSE’ due to its outstanding tolerance of 0.05%, TCR of ±2 ppm/°C max. and load-life stability of ±0.005% typical (70°C, 2000 hrs., rated power).

In addition, an external current limiting resistor of 2 kΩ (ideal) is required for the SENSEH_x pin. The accuracy of this resistor directly affects the RTD specifications. Analog Devices approved the Alpha Electronics RWB2K000AL for the SENSEH_x resistor due to its tight tolerance of 0.05%, TCR of ±2 ppm/°C max. and ultra-low capacitance.

Made in Japan, the RWA/RWB/RWC Series resistors from Alpha Electronics, a brand of VPG Foil Resistors, feature low TCR of ±2 ppm/°C  and resistance tolerance as low as ±0.01% in three case sizes: 0603 (RWA Series), 0805 (RWB Series), and 1206 (RWC Series). Produced with Bulk Metal® Foil technology, the RWA/RWB/RWC Series devices are optimized for industrial applications that require resistors with extremely tight load-life stability of ±0.005% typical at 70°C and rated power for 2,000 hours. In these applications, the devices provide superior TCR (temperature coefficient of resistance), long-term stability and pulse handling capability when compared to thin-film resistors.

Additionally, the agreement allows for MIG USA to offer QDX™ HealthID to users of its test kits.

QDX™ HealthID, currently in beta release, is a SaaS-based platform that allows companies and individuals to see and select a particular COVID-19 test kit, authenticate and record the test results in a secure way, and then share those authenticated results with friends, family—or any other third party of their choosing.

MIG USA is awaiting FDA EUA approval for two rapid serology tests, to which MIG USA has distributor rights in the U.S. and several countries abroad.

The agreement allows those persons registered on the QDX™ HealthID platform to use a MIG USA test kit — when a health care provider prescribes it. The agreement is non-exclusive and allows for other registered test kits and diagnostic services to be used by QDX™ HealthID customers.

The agreement also allows for MIG USA to offer the QDX™ HealthID service to users of MIG USA’s and affiliates’ branded test kits. Initially, MIG USA’s employees will use QDX™ HealthID to create their health status. Additionally, MIG USA is including QDX™ HealthID as part of usability testing submission to the FDA.

Setting the stage for the entire conference on Monday, August 17, is the AIChE Government and Industry Leaders (AGILE) Award Keynote lecture, to be delivered by Bhavesh V. (Bob) Patel, Chief Executive Officer of LyondellBasell. Patel’s address will explore factors and forces affecting the global petrochemical industry.

Another highlight on August 17 will be an industry panel devoted to the chemical process industries’ (CPI) response to COVID-19. Company leaders will describe the ways that COVID-19 has shaped corporate culture; developments in the search for effective vaccines; and the CPI’s contributions to controlling the spread of COVID-19.

The role of chemical engineers as drivers of efficient manufacturing techniques will be examined in several topical conferences under the “Industry 4.0” umbrella, incorporating topics such as big data analytics and digitalization.

New topical conferences are being devoted to the safe transition to the hydrogen economy, as well as chemical engineering’s role in addressing the problems of waste plastics. Other conferences include the 8th International Conference on Upstream Engineering and Flow Assurance, the 20th Gas Utilization Conference, the 23rd Refinery Processing Conference, and the 32nd Ethylene Producers Conference— as well as conferences covering clean and efficient energy, distillation, heat exchangers, process intensification, and strategies for career building in a virtual environment.

AIChE’s Fuels and Petrochemicals Division kicks off its energy-focused programming on August 17 with a plenary address — co-programmed with the Industry 4.0 topical conference — presented by Lloyd Colegrove (Dow Chemical), who will discuss the impact of big data analytics on the transformation of the chemicals industry. The Big Data Analytics Plenary Session on August 18 includes a keynote by Antonio Pietri (AspenTech), who will describe how artificial intelligence and digitalization are transforming the process industries. The plenary also welcomes Robert J. Reynolds (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), who will discuss NASA’s use of data analytics in monitoring human health.

Daily keynote speakers include Matt Loeb (SECURE) who will discuss cybersecurity; Thomas Munoz (Homeland Security Director for Texas City, TX), who will describe a collaborative approach toward a community’s disaster recovery process; and Mark Johnson (Clemson University and former director of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy).

Organized by AIChE’s Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS), the Global Congress on Process Safety (GCPS) engages safety engineers, plant managers and process design experts worldwide in a continuing exploration of technologies and strategies to ensure plant safety, manage risk, and strengthen process safety management (PSM) programs. The Global Congress builds upon CCPS’s vision for universal process safety excellence in the chemical process industries.

The GCPS begins on August 17 with a plenary keynote address by Shakeel Kadri, Executive Director and CEO of CCPS, whose talk is entitled “Does Age Really Matter?”

The GCPS incorporates the programming of the 54th Annual Loss Prevention Symposium, the 22nd Process Plant Safety Symposium, and the 9th Process Safety Management Mentoring Forum. At the 35th CCPS International Conference, experts will review the industry’s progress toward CCPS’s Vision 20/20 goals for process safety excellence, and consider steps to advance global process safety in the years ahead. The international emphasis of the meeting is underscored in sessions offering “Perspectives on Process Safety from Around the Globe.” A session devoted to “Case Histories and Lessons Learned” (August 21) spotlights a cross-section of real world plant incidents.

Codelco turns giant mine upside down – GHH supplies maintenance vehicles

With several vehicles, the machine manufacturer GHH now also supports the world’s largest copper producer Codelco, which is currently managing a mega-project in the hot Atacama desert – turning a giant mine upside down. Meanwhile, other utility vehicles went to India, Kazhakstan and Russia, including the newly developed emulsion charger BEC100.

Codelco estimates its annual copper production at around 1.7 million tonnes. The Chilean mine operator is also the second largest molybdenum producer. Codelco recently stated that it has a world market share of nine percent for each of these two raw materials. The state-owned company now operates seven mines and four smelters. With 385,000 tonnes of copper ore per year to date, the Chuquicamata mine has the second largest share, just behind El Teniente. It is thus one of the largest in the world.

An ambitious transformation is currently taking place there: the  mining goes from surface to underground. The site is thus being turned upside down, so to speak. The project started in 2019 and should be completed by 2023. With a slightly reduced production rate of 315 kilotons per year, the deposit is not expected to reach its limits until 2057.

Mighty conveyor belt 1000 m deep

A project of this type and size is rare in the industry. This is not least due to the installed 7 km long conveyor belt, which covers an elevation distance of 1 km from the extraction site to the earth’s surface. There, a 6 km long conveyor belt then runs again to the interim storage facility.

This is where GHH comes into play: the manufacturer of machines for mining and tunnelling provides Codelco as a launch customer with its newly developed HG16 maintenance vehicle. The first vehicle was recently shipped, three more will follow. The HG16 will be used to maintain the powerful conveyor belt. During the development process Codelco’s requirements were taken into account – a real plus for other customers who will benefit from it.

Utility vehicles to support mining and tunnelling projects

The HG16 is a four-wheeled crossover, converyor belt maintenance vehicle equipped with loading platform, working platform and loading crane. The crane lifts almost one ton. The working platform, which can be extended to a length of 4.5 m, can be slewed through 95 degrees, thus covering a large working area. The four-wheel drive vehicle weighs 9.35 tons and measures 6750 x 2400 x 3100 mm (LxWxH). It is driven by a 4.4 litre four-cylinder diesel engine with 85 kW output. It complies with the EU Stage 3A / US EPA Tier 3 emissions standards. The enclosed cabin for two persons is certified for underground use in accordance with ROPS & FOPS Level 2. The operator’s seat can be swivelled through 180 degrees.

The German machine builder must have done some things right, as Codelco had previously acquired a GHH branded BVK-05 articulated crane truck manufactured in Turkey. In general, the utility program is currently developing magnificently. Parallel to Codelco, other newly developed vehicles were delivered to India, Kazhakstan and Russia. Among them the IS-26 concrete spraying machine, the new BKPT7 Material Transporter and  the new articulated emulsion charger truck BEC100 with 17.5 tons operating weight, which will be used in a gold mine in the Amur region. Here, too, GHH has incorporated the customer’s requirements to a large extent.

At the beginning of 2020, GHH announced the formation of the GHH Group as a merger of several manufacturers of the Schmidt Kranz Group. GHH sees itself as a “Total Solution Provider”, supplying almost everything in the field of rock logistics on wheels under the GHH brand.
