Norway: contract award for the next phase of the world’s longest bridge using structural timber

On Monday 7 September, representatives of the Norwegian road authority Nye Veier and the joint venture BERINOR ANS, associating BESIX and Rizzani de Eccher, signed the contract for the design, permitting and further development of the E6 Moelv-Roterud infrastructure project.

The project includes a main bridge over Lake Mjøsa spanning more than one kilometre, and an 11-kilometre section of four-lane motorway.

The bridge concept will make it the longest in the world to use structural timber and will set a new benchmark for the use of sustainable materials in major infrastructure projects. Sustainability aspects, including limited greenhouse gas emissions and quality landscape integration, are amongst the primary objectives of Nye Veier and BERINOR.

BESIX and Rizzani de Eccher are associated, among others, with the Norwegian contractor AF Gruppen, the designer and consultant Multiconsult and architect Knut Selberg.

BESIX and Rizzani de Eccher have demonstrated in the past the quality of their collaboration in the infrastructure field. In September 2019, several months ahead of schedule, they successfully completed the Crown Princess Mary Bridge (Kronprinsesse Marys Bro) in Denmark. The project included an 8.2 km four-lane motorway and a 1.4 km bridge over the Roskilde fjord, the first cantilever bridge built in Denmark since 1970. Both the motorway and the bridge crossed an EU Natura 2000 area, the works were therefore subject to strict environmental requirements.

2022 AISC Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings Now Available for Public Comment

CHICAGO – The 2022 edition of the AISC Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings (AISC 341) draft will be available for public review from September 4, 2020, until October 16, 2020.

The Seismic Provisions apply to the design, fabrication, and erection of structural steel and composite steel and concrete seismic force-resisting systems. They are used in conjunction with the Specification for Structural Steel Buildings. This is the first public review of this draft specification, which is expected to be completed and available in late 2022.

The draft will be available as a free download at aisc.org/publicreview between September 4 and October 16, 2020. Printed copies are also available (for a $35 nominal charge) by calling 312.670.5411.

TxDOT Selects LAN to Improve Ferry Operations and Shoreside Facilities at Galveston-Port Bolivar

(HOUSTON) The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has selected planning, engineering and program management firm Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) to enhance ferry operations and shoreside facilities at Galveston-Port Bolivar during the next five years.

TxDOT operates two ferry systems that provide a shorter route than existing roads for travel from Port Aransas to Harbor Island and from Galveston to Port Bolivar. The ferry services are a continuation of the state roadway system that offer motorists an alternate route in the Galveston and Port Aransas communities. The ferries also serve as an alternative hurricane route for residents and visitors. The two ferry systems operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and carry more than 9 million passengers annually.

Over the years, TxDOT has made improvements to its infrastructure at these two facilities keeping in mind existing components at the ferry landings, anticipated traffic growth, ship channel improvements and short- and long-range maintenance and expenditures. This five-year Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract is a continuation of these modernization efforts.

“These enhancements will allow us the opportunity to better serve our customers,” said Galveston Ferry Manager Bill Mallini. “We look forward to the work moving forward as we know this will greatly improve the quality of service we provide.”

As part of the contract, LAN and its sub-consultants will evaluate, maintain, repair and enhance ferry facilities, including docks, infrastructure and marine shoreside systems at Galveston-Port Bolivar. Specifically, LAN will provide project management, quality assurance/quality control, structural engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, plumbing engineering, hydrologic studies and coastal hydraulics services.

Other engineering firms that will serve as LAN’s sub-consultants on this contract include Bio-West, Inc. (wetland delineation), Blanton & Associates, Inc. (traffic noise analysis, air quality analysis and other assessments), Cobb-Fendley & Associates, Inc. (land surveying and utility engineering), Collins Engineers, Inc. (underwater inspections), Foresight Planning & Engineering Services, LLC (construction schedule support), McKim & Creed, Inc. (hydrographic surveying), Tolunay-Wong Engineers, Inc. (geotechnical engineering), RODS Subsurface Utility Engineering, Inc. (subsurface utility engineering) and W.F. Baird & Associates, Inc. (hydrodynamic modeling).

GDOT Wins Top National Award for Transportation Communications

Safety for Middle School Students Focus of Marketing Partnership with Scholastic

ATLANTA, GA – Recognizing the Risk, a distracted driving and walking outreach program for Georgia’s middle school students, won the 2020 Excel Award from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ (AASHTO) Committee on Transportation Communications (TransComm). The campaign, a partnership between the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) and Scholastic, the children’s media company, won for “Best Integrated Campaign without a Consultant.”  The Excel award is TransComm’s highest honor.

The purpose of Recognizing the Risk is to engage Georgia’s youth in grades 6 to 8 about the dangers and consequences of distracted driving and walking before they establish those risky behaviors – before they get behind the wheel of a car. This innovative approach reaches an audience not already set in their bad habits on the roadway.

The first of its kind Recognizing the Risk cross-curriculum centers on student collaboration and problem-solving through English language arts (ELA), social studies and math.

“GDOT is proud to partner with Scholastic in this crucial outreach program to inspire positive social behaviors among students who walk as pedestrians and ride their bikes – and before these up-and-coming young drivers actually start driving,” said Georgia DOT Director of Strategic Communications Scott Higley.

Georgia DOT in partnership with the global children’s publishing, education and media company, Scholastic, launched Recognizing the Risk in 2019 to educate the next generation of Georgia drivers about unsafe behaviors. The three-year initiative, now in its second year, provides middle school students, teachers and parents with classroom resources focused on promoting pedestrian and driver safety by discussing the hazards of texting, headphones and other distracted behaviors. The program includes a poster teaching guide for teachers; a Recognizing the Risk digital education destination developed by Scholastic that includes lesson plans, student worksheets and projects that require critical thinking, persuasive writing, research and distracted driving/walking assessments at a location close to school; and a Student Advocacy Magazine Contest where students create a four-page magazine for distribution in their communities.

Recognizing the Risk complements GDOT’s Drive Alert Arrive Alive and See and Be Seen campaigns.

“Earning a TransComm Skills Award is a tremendous honor for state DOTs,” noted Lloyd Brown, AASHTO’s director of communications. “Award nominees are judged by other state DOTs, meaning that the winners’ work is considered outstanding and worthy of recognition by one’s peers.”

The TransComm annual communications awards is considered a premier competition in the transportation industry. While Georgia DOT has won numerous TransComm skills awards over the years, it has been over a decade since GDOT’s last prestigious Excel Award.

DALLAS, TX September 2, 2020 Statewide Safety Systems recently was awarded a two-year contract by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to provide services and equipment for its operations in Wood and Van Zandt counties. As part of the agreement, Statewide will supply more than a dozen employees daily, as well as equipment including pilot vehicles and truck-mounted attenuators.

TxDOT is responsible for maintaining 80,000 miles of road and supporting aviation, maritime, rail and public transportation across the state. Statewide expanded its operations into nearby Tyler, Texas in 2019, and continues to grow its service offerings in eastern Texas.
